Our Programs

Custom-built, faculty-led study abroad programs rooted in science, culture, and community in the Yucatán Peninsula.

This flagship program immerses students in the diverse ecosystems across the Yucatan Peninsula while learning about the ecology of tropical terrestrial and marine ecosystems, local environmental challenges, current and pre-European Mayan culture, and how local culture and traditions promote the environmental sustainability of the Yucatan Peninsula. 

While this course can be tailored to anyone, it can be ideal for Faculty in Environmental Science, Ecology, Latin American Studies, Anthropology, or Global Studies

• Explore the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve — from mangroves and estuaries to tropical dry forests
• Learn about Jaguar conservation and sustainable ecotourism at UMA San Manuel
• Boat through carbon-rich mangroves, visit pink salt flats, and study traditional Mayan salt mining
• Experience rural Mayan life in Dzonot Carretero with traditional cooking and cultural exchanges
• Explore and swim in crystalline cenotes in the Yucatan 
• Visit Museums and historic sites and learn about Mayan Culture
• Meet professors and researchers studying flora and fauna of the Yucatan Peninsula
• Visit ancient temples of Uxmal and the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve — a pristine forest teeming with jaguars, monkeys, and endemic birds
• Witness a 3-million-bat emergence at the Volcano of Bats near Xpujil
• Snorkel in Akumal Bay, swimming with marine fauna and exploring cenotes meeting the Caribbean

Note: All logistics, site access, local guides, meals, and academic coordination are handled by LATAM Study Abroad — leaving faculty free to teach and students free to learn.
