LATAM Study Abroad was born from a simple idea: immersive, faculty-led experiences in Latin America can change lives — for students, for local communities, and for the planet.
Founded by Dr. Antonio Celis-Murillo, an ecologist and conservation scientist and science leader originally from Mexico, LATAM bridges academic curiosity with real-world learning. Antonio, along with his team, bring more than two decades of experience doing sciewntific research and connecting research and education across borders.
At LATAM, we partner with local universities, professors and researchers to co-design short-term study abroad programs focused on ecology, conservation, and culture in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Each program is crafted with care, rooted in authentic community engagement and scientific integrity.
Because it’s one of the most biodiverse and culturally rich regions in the hemisphere. The Yucatan Peninsula, which includes the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, and Campeche, is a vast region brimming with spectacular biodiversity and ecosystems ranging from mangroves and xeric shrublands to wet tropical forests.
The Yucatan Peninsula has been home to the Mayan civilization for the past 8,000 years, and Mayan descendants and culture continue to persist. The Yucatan Peninsula is an ideal location to introduce students to a broad range of real-world environmental and sustainability issues while gaining a deep understanding about the challenge of balancing short-term human needs with the long-term health of environmental systems.
